When Spinal Decompression Therapy Is the Solution

When Spinal Decompression Therapy Is the Solution

spinal decompression to reduce back painBack pain can come from a number of causes, which is why Total Chiropractic and Wellness Center has an equal number of solutions. One of those solutions is spinal decompression therapy, a technique that works especially well for disc herniation. A visit to our Sugar Land center begins with a consultation and evaluation by our chiropractor Dr. Yvette Nadeau. If we then determine the cause of your pain stems from a compressed spinal column, spinal decompression can be the solution you need for healing and pain relief.

How Spinal Decompression Alleviates Back Pain

Spinal decompression works to alleviate back pain by releasing the built-up pressure in your spine caused by the compression. A herniated or bulging disc can be the culprit behind the compression, an issue often caused by accidents, a spinal misalignment or water loss in the disc due to the aging process. Such a scenario can cause the disc’s inner cartilage to protrude or the disc to move out of its natural position. The damaged disc or its cartilage can then press down on the surrounding nerves, leading to symptoms that can include weakness, numbness, loss of sensation and pain.

The slow, gentle process of spinal decompression therapy involves being secured on a mechanized table. Dr. Nadeau then employs digital controls to slightly elongate the table in stages. As the table elongates, the spine elongates along with it, a process that allows discs to slide back into their natural place. Because the therapy involves such a slow and gentle process, more than one visit is typically required for the discs to become fully realigned with adequate room to heal.

Decompression therapy can work to correct specific issues on its own, or it can be an effective part of an ongoing wellness plan for those who suffer from pain due to chronic issues. Our chiropractor can advise on the frequency of the visits as well as if spinal decompression therapy may be a feasible solution for you.
